Fluoroscopy is a specialized imaging process that allows radiologists to view a patient’s organs in motion, most frequently the gastrointestinal organs.
Fluoroscopy is a type of imaging test that shows a continuous x-ray image on a monitor, much like an x-ray movie. It is used to diagnose or treat patients by displaying the movement of a body part or of an instrument or dye (contrast agent) through the body. During a fluoroscopy procedure, an x-ray beam is passed through the body. The image is transmitted to a monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail.
Fluoroscopy is used in many types of examinations and procedures. Some examples include:
- Barium enemas, Upper GI series, Small bowel series, and Esophagrams (to view movement through the GI tract)
- Modified barium swallow study (to evaluate the swallowing function)
- Cystogram and retrograde urethrogram (to view the urinary tracts)
- Hysterosalpingogram (to view the female organs for infertility)
- Catheter and needle placement (to direct placement of instruments during angioplasty/angiography, arthrograms and lumbar punctures)
Fluoroscopy is a type of x-ray procedure and carries the same types of risks as other x-ray procedures. The radiation dose the patient receives varies depending on the individual exam. The lowest possible exposure for the shortest possible time is always performed for all our exams.
Fluoroscopy exams performed at GCM Radiology are digital, meaning single or series of images are recorded to a computer rather than directly to film. Once digitized, images can be viewed in real time on a computer monitor. Our radiologists, with the assistance of highly trained technologists, perform digital fluoroscopy exams in a private and safe environment. Many fluoroscopy exams require special preparation which is provided during the patient scheduling process and is also available online. Digital fluoroscopy exams are offered at both our outpatient facilities and affiliated hospitals.
