Although there are no studies that indicate that total body screening CT will prolong life or significantly alter the course of any detected disease, GCM understands that on a case-by-case basis, significant abnormalities can be detected at an early stage that can lead to improved survival for an individual patient. Therefore, GCM offers total body screening CT when requested by a patient and their referring physician. The main argument against total body scanning is that it often reveals insignificant findings that lead to additional tests and patient anxiety. By applying GCM’s years of subspecialized training and diagnostic CT experience to the ScanSmart Screening CT program, GCM is able to determine which findings are unimportant and which are truly significant and require additional work-up.
ScanSmart Total Body Scan includes the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis.
Tumors can be detected in the brain, thyroid, lungs, liver, spleen, pancreas,
and kidneys. However, since this screening test is performed without intravenous
contrast, the sensitivity for detecting small tumors in these organs is decreased.
Other abnormalities that can be detected include hiatal hernia, gallstones,
kidney stones, aortic aneurysm, etc.
